Roofing is a general term that can include a number of different roofing materials, building structures, and systems. The roof is often the largest covering of a structure, featuring all structures and materials needed to support it from the top down, providing protection from rain, sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high winds. A roof membrane is often used as a roofing material, but sometimes membrane tiles, shingles, metal roofing, asphalt shingles, or wood shakes may be used. A roofing system is any type of arrangement that allows water to drain off of a roof and away from the structure.

When Roofing Means More Than Money

Roofing is done through two primary processes: shearing and floating. Shearing occurs when metal, tile, slate, etc., are cut to fit together and connected by smaller metal pieces known as “towers”. Shingles is a roofing material consisting of individual shingles or smaller slabs of metal that are fastened together with overlapping seams. Roofers use roofing materials such as metal, asphalt, felt, and clay tile to create the final roof. These materials are blended together and formed into shingles that are attached to individual slabs of metal called “rafters” or “stiles”.

Roofing leaks are caused by gaps in the protective membrane that covers the roof. The membrane leaks are usually caused by metal flashing around the edge of the roof, which is either not properly attached to the house or does not properly fit the house. Air compression and precipitation can also cause leaks to occur in roofing, often due to cracked asphalt shingles or other roofing materials. Most leaks can be repaired using standard sealants, although some can only be fixed by roofing experts with special tools. If a leak is discovered before the damage is done, repairs can often be made and the roofing can go back to working correctly in just a few days.
